The weather over the last week here in Iowa has been absolutely splendid! It’s been somewhere in the 70′s everyday, sunshine, bright blue skies, perfect amount of a breeze, it really couldn’t have been any better! While everyone else’s Labor Day weekend was coming to an end, our family’s 3 day “Labor Day” weekend was just beginning, thanks to Mr.H’s work schedule. We really enjoyed our extra day with Daddy this week and I am blessed to say our time together was pure bliss. Full of peaceful and relaxing quality time, and of course, good food!
It’s so hard to believe Fall is right around the corner! I was thinking about this the other day, and although I’m very sad Summer is nearly over (it went WAY to fast, as always!) I’m also getting so excited for Fall! I’m ready for football, Uggs, sweatshirts, hot cocoa, apple pie, bonfires, the trees changing colors, hayrides, pumpkins, and the sweet smell of the crisp Autumn air!
One of our favorite things to do as a family is go to our local Pick-Your-Own Farm and Berry Patch and spend a couple hours out in nature, picking the freshest fruits and vegetables we can find! We just did it this week and my, oh, my did we get a plentiful harvest! We left with 1 pint of red raspberries, 1 pint of blackberries (big, giant, half dollar sized!) and 38 apples, a mix of Honeycrisp and Earligold! Claire had so much fun running up and down the rows of berries, picking “flowers” (a.k.a. dandelions ;) ) playing with sticks, and eating as many fresh berries and apples as she possibly could! Mr.H and I took turns taking pictures (with our new Nikon D3100 that he just recently bought me) and picking fruit. Normally, I’m the better photographer, but I must admit Mr. H’s photography skills are quickly improving!
So now that we have all of this fruit, it’s time to get baking! I’ve been brainstorming what I’m going to do with all of this fruit, and here are the ideas I’ve come up with so far:
*Old Fashioned Raspberry Jam
*Old Fashioned Apple Crisp Crisp
*Applesauce
*Blackberry Cobbler
*Caramel Apple Cheesecake Bars
*Apple Cake (or Mini Apple Cakes)
*Apple Pancakes with Apple Cider Syrup
What are some of your favorite things to do with raspberries, blackberries, and apples? I’d love to hear from you!
