My First Garden

1 Aug

I don’t think I’ve mentioned the garden my husband and I planted this year. It has been another item on my bucket list for quite some time. I loved the idea of growing my own food, eating the freshest in season foods for a fraction of the what it would cost at the grocery store. I also loved the idea of learning how to can foods so we could enjoy the garden’s bounty all winter long. So make that two things I’ve been able to cross off my bucket list, growing a garden and learning how to can. Our garden is huge. We have 4 red pepper plants, 4 green pepper plants, 3 jalapeno plants, 3 (20ft) rows of green beans, gourmet lettuce blends, buttercrunch lettuce, kohlrabi, broccoli, cucumbers, a bazillion onions, 1 cherry tomato plant, 3 beef steak tomato plants, and one early-girl tomato plant.

I’m so proud of myself for how well I’ve taken care of the garden and how well I’ve done with the upkeep, weeding, pruning and picking. I’ve taken it as a personal challenge to make sure not one single piece of food from the garden goes to waste. I’m going to be sharing with you all of the recipes I’ve been making to use all of the garden’s harvest. Even my husband, who isn’t crazy about tomatoes, has been delighted with the food I’ve been making. I love how fresh and healthy everything tastes. You get so full and don’t feel like you gained 10 pounds after you’ve finished eating.

Here’s some pictures of my garden and how far it’s come, as well as some pictures of the amount of produce we’ve already brought in this season! They were all taken with my cell phone, so I apologize in advance for the poor quality!
